Homework
- Homework is often a controversial issue with teachers and parents alike. As a grade level, we draw on Robert Marzano's extensive research as a foundation for our philosophy of what best meets the needs of students. In the fifth grade we aim for FIFTY MINUTES a night. Obviously this is a guide, as some students will take a little more, while others, a little less. If you have any concerns about the time it is taking your student to complete their homework, please do not hesitate to contact me.
- Fifth graders, in preparation for middle school and beyond, are expected to be independent enough to track their own homework. Every day, your student will write their homework in their planners. On a typical night you can expect the following:
- Study Link math page of skills from the current unit
- Independent Reading
- Writing
- Occasional project work
Important Notes:
- STUDENTS SHOULD BE READING THE SAME BOOK AT HOME AS THEY ARE AT SCHOOL. This requires them to bring their book back and forth to school each day.
- Research shows the single most important factor in improving reading is "time in text". This means the BEST way for a student to become a better reader is to read a book at their "independent" level. This means it is essential that students are given the autonomy to pick books they love. Even the strongest readers like to go back and read lower-level books from time to time. Also, each time a child rereads a book, they understand it on a deeper level. However, if you are concerned about your child's book choice, please let me know and we can work together to find the perfect book.
